According to the WHO 480 abortions are carried out in Romania for every 1,000 children that are born.
In Europe, Romania is followed by Estonia and Hungary with 447 abortions for every 1,000 births, followed by Bulgaria and Georgia, with 417 and 407 abortions for every 1,000 children born respectively.
Other Balkan countries also have high abortions rates. Serbia has 323 abortions for each 1,000 births, Macedonia 209 and Albania 207.
Croatia and Montenegro have a lower rate of abortions, with 92 and 114 abortions carried out for every 1,000 children born. The average rate of abortions in EU member states is 226 per 1,000 live births.
According to a study published last week by Albania’s National Institute of Public Health, the national abortion ratio fell from 419.2 per 1,000 births in 2000 to 270.2 per 1,000 births in 2009.
“The abortion rate continues to be high due to the small use of modern family planning techniques,” the study noted.
