Dir. Gillo Pontecorvo
This is both a political and an action film. The action is superbly filmed, with the labyrinthine kasbah of Algiers as background. The movie is a technical masterpiece. Those prejudiced against "old" or "auteur" films should leave their worries behind: this is not a slow or boring film by any means. Although the director narrates the story taking the revolutionaries side, he makes sure to coldly portray the extreme, merciless violence they employed to achieve their ends. In this regard, the scene of the triple cafe bombing in the European Quarter of Algiers is heart-stopping, one of the crowning achievements of european cinema from my limited perspective. A must-see.
